In 2016, Snap Inc., maker of popular messaging app Snapchat, launched a new feature called Snapchat dark mode.

It functions similarly to night mode on your phone, which allows you to adjust your screen display settings based on the current time of day. So you can use Snap’s version at night or in dimly lit rooms. And users love it!

To use it, open your Snapchat app, go to settings and then select manage. Once you’re in that menu, look for Snapchat dark mode and click it. Now click turn on and you’ll be all set!

And that’s all there is to it! Your Snap will now look a little more like Twitter, which launched its night mode in November 2018.

It’s a feature we’re sure you’ll enjoy using while out at night and don’t want to turn on your bright screen. Just remember, dark mode won’t work when taking videos or images—you can only see it in chat mode and on your friend list.

But Why did they remove Snapchat dark mode on Android?

Snapchat’s new black mode is super cool but only available for iOS devices and some users are wondering why. With a simple toggle from Bright to Dark, you can change up your entire interface, including text and background colors.

Pretty much everything will turn jet black except for photos and videos taken within in-the app. Thankfully, you can still have that dark mode on your Android device too.

Yes, Android users can enable it too. It’s easier than ever for us here in Androidlandia because you don’t need a rooted device or a particular kind of skin.

To get dark mode working on your device, you will need an app from the developer and XDA Senior Member Zeke Ye who is also responsible for some other Snapchat mods.

The mod itself isn’t all that complicated but there are a few steps involved. You will need to be rooted with Magisk installed as well as have Substratum running on your device before you begin.

The process involves replacing one file in /system/framework/framework-res.apk with another so keep that in mind before continuing.

Once you’ve gotten all of that ready, you can begin modifying your Framework-res.apk file. To get access to it, you will need a root-capable file explorer such as Total Commander. If you don’t have one already, head over to Google Play and grab one like ES File Explorer.

Once installed, open up your app drawer and head into Settings > Apps & Notifications > Advanced > Special App Access > Root Explorer. Grant access when prompted then open up Total Commander from your app drawer and find Framework-res.apk in /system/framework/.

Copy it to a safe place on your device or even make a backup for later use if needed. Now go back to your file explorer and long-press Framework-res.apk before selecting copy from the menu.

Head back into Substratum by heading back into Settings > Apps & Notifications > Advanced > Special App Access > Substratum Theme Engine and tap Open at the bottom of your screen. Select Overlay Manager at the top left of your screen followed by Install Default System Overlays at the top right.

Now, select Framework-res.apk and tap on Choose File at the bottom right. Choose your modified copy of Framework-res.apk that you copied over in your file explorer and Substratum will take care of installing it for you.

Once it’s finished, reboot your device by heading back into Substratum > Themes > Reboot or through Android’s settings menu.

When you get back up, you should see your modified Framework-res.apk file in place and when you start up Snapchat, you should be able to find dark mode inside of your app settings. Now head over and try it out.

You’ll notice that there are a few issues with white text on a black background but that can easily be fixed by heading into Substratum > Themes > Styles > Overlay Manager > SystemUI (System UI) and changing Background Style from Opaque to Transparent.

If you don’t like having transparent text or if there are other issues, just go back into Overlay Manager and tap on SystemUI again followed by changing Background Style from Transparent to Opaque.

Which Apps are affected by this new function?

Both Snapchat and Instagram have a dark mode, which hides bright lights from their respective applications. Their purpose is to prevent eye strain from staring at your screen for too long in a poorly lit environment.

This is only an option if you have the brightness turned up high on your device. To have access to dark mode, you’ll need an iPhone or iPad running iOS 11 or later and Android running 5.0 or later.

Conclusion

So, it is not available for Android devices. Maybe in near future, we will see dark mode on our android phones. We can only hope for that. Until then, let’s just enjoy what we have and use it properly. Use your mobile phones wisely and keep yourself away from social media addiction.
